A strategy or business plan has no value unless it can be or has been implemented. In most instances strategy takes an organisation from a less desirable situation to a more desired position. In this sense strategy is all about managing change or this gap. To know if you are on course with your strategy you need to have appropriate metrics as part of a performance management system. These metrics will either confirm the direction of the intended strategy or possibly indicate that parts of the strategy need to be modified. This tweaking of strategy is to be expected given that most strategies or business plans are based on a number of assumptions and forecasts. How often do we get these right?
The balanced scorecard developed by Kaplan and Norton has been successfully adopted by many of the world's leading organizations. The balanced scorecard is a powerful way to communicate strategy to members of the organisation. When correctly implemented every person in the organisation is aware of their contribution towards achieving the declared strategy. While it is essential to implement strategy so that the organisation can fulfil its purpose in the future, it is also vital to manage continuity today so that you can generate profits if you are a private sector organization or deliver services if you are a public sector organisation thereby justifying the taxes collected. Managing continuity is performing the day-to-day tasks of the organization. Again it is important to know how well organizations perform these tasks and a system for performance management linked to a programme of continuous improvement is crucial. Here again key performance indicators (KPIs) must be available to help those in delivering the products or services to customers.
